Preparing for Hair Implant Surgery: What to Expect

Hair transplant

Hair transplant surgery has become so refined and successful in recent years that many men (and women) are taking advantage of its many benefits. If you are contemplating this aesthetic procedure or already have a date on your calendar, here’s what to expect before, during, and after your hair replacement surgery.

You Will Have an Informative Consultation with Your Doctor

Having a one-on-one conversation about your hair restoration goals helps you and your doctor determine what’s best for your health and appearance. Your doctor will thoroughly evaluate your medical history and aesthetic goals. He will also examine the scalp to determine the reasons for hair loss. For many people–men and women alike–hair loss stems from their heredity.

The doctor also evaluates the scalp areas with viable hair growth. These sites will be harvested for hair follicles, which can be grafted to thin and balding areas.

Finally, you will learn what kind of procedure would work best for you. You may undergo follicular unit extraction (FUE), in which single hair follicles are extracted and grafted to the balding areas, or follicular unit transplant (FUT), in which the surgeon harvests a strip of viable follicles for placement on the balding areas. Both require local anesthetic and sedation for maximum patient comfort.

You Will Come to The Hair Loss Clinic for Your Day Surgery

Once you have decided to go for a surgery, you and the scheduling team will determine the best day, date, and time for your procedure.

Make sure to wear comfortable clothes. You will receive post-operative instructions for pain relief and scalp care afterward.

You Will Go Home to Rest and Recuperate

This is an important aspect of your hair transplant procedure. Refrain from all strenuous home, family, and job responsibilities until your doctor says you can return to them.

Also,

  • Pain medication will be prescribed as needed for scalp soreness
  • Some crusting and feeling of scalp tightness itching may be experienced
  • Follow the specific scalp care instructions provided by our team in your post-op care kit
  • The grafted follicles typically shed within a week or two, with new growth taking two to four months

Some patients receive additional hair growth treatments to ensure healthy, long-lasting hair growth.
