How We Do a Beard Restoration

Beard Restoration

For many men, growing and maintaining facial hair is something of an art. In the late 1960s and early ’70s, mustaches of all shapes and sizes were all the rage for those inspired by rock musicians and celebrities. Today, however, full beards and goatees are more popular as a statement of one’s sense of identity, rugged independence, and masculinity.

But, alas, not everyone can grow the perfect beard. Their facial hair may be sparse, patchy, or nonexistent for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Genetics
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Alopecia barbae (a condition causing small circular patches in a beard)
  • A skin infection creating hair loss
  • Facial burns or scarring preventing hair growth
  • Vitamin A and beta A carotene deficiency
  • Lack of amino acid necessary for hair growth
  • Stress or anxiety affecting hair growth

If your attempts to grow a beard using supplements or serums are falling short of your desired results, the good news is that there is a solution. Just as hair can be substantially restored to the top of your head, the same technique can be applied to grow full facial hair via hair transplant surgery.

How Can I Get a Beard?

Here’s how the FUE (follicular unit excision) procedure works:

First, hair follicles are excised from a portion of your scalp or beard. Scalp hair can be harvested using FUE or FUT. Beard hair is always harvested using FUE.  The follicles are then quickly transferred to the desired area of the chin and jaw area in order to create fuller, denser facial hair.

This is done this way for three reasons: (1) to ensure that the new facial hair blends into your existing hair for a natural look, and (2) so your body will not reject the follicles, because they are coming from your own body, and (3) so the area that is “donating” the follicles will not look different than before. If your beard is actually thick in some places but not in others, beard hair can be used rather than scalp hair.

What Can I Expect from a Beard Restoration?

Depending on your specific needs, the hair transplant procedure will take between two and five hours. Some patients may require a second session, but this is rare.

Also, the transplanted hairs will fall out after two weeks. This is a natural part of the process. As your hair surgeon will explain, the hair will grow back within three months, providing you with the beard you’ve always wanted.

Who Can Get a Hair Transplant Beard Restoration?

Typically, the best candidates for beard transplants are men with bald or patchy beards and those seeking coverage of facial scars, or other imperfections such as a hairlip or repaired cleft palate. It is also a viable option for those who have undergone sexual reassignment surgery or hormone therapy and want to sport a stylish beard of their own from their own hair.
