Does a Receding Hairline Mean That I Will Lose My Hair?

If you’ve looked in the mirror recently and noticed thinning hair surrounding your temples – or that your hair simply isn’t easily styled the way it used to be – this may be a sign of hairline recession.

Why Does Hair Loss Happen?

Hair recession is usually a hereditary trait, with men who have a family history of hair loss being more prone to partial or full baldness. Even the timing of hair loss is similar from generation to generation.

However, medications, stress, poor diet, and hormonal changes – such as an increase of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) – can all act as catalysts of hair loss.

What Can I Do About My Thinning Hair?

Don’t just throw on a baseball cap and give up. A person’s fingernails and hair often act as a window to our overall health, showing signs of issues that are happening inside the body. Fortunately, there are many new methods of slowing or remedying hair loss, and some of them can be started right in the comfort of your own home.

Diet

Adjust your diet to include foods that are high in protein, minerals, carbohydrates, and “good” fats, such as those found in fish and nuts. You may also want to speak with your doctor about vitamins that can promote hair growth.

While you’re examining what you can do, also scrutinize what you should not be doing. Over-styling, combing, rubbing, and aggressive towel drying can all be detrimental to maintaining a full, thick mane.

Medication

If you catch hair recession in its premature stages, you may be able to combat its effects with certain hair-loss medications. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, there are non-surgical options that can help enhance the appearance of the front of the scalp – that is, as long as there is some hair to work with.

After a 48-week trial using a topical solution, most men in one study reported apparent improvements to their receding hairlines. It’s important to note that the use of these prescriptions must be continued and cannot be stopped, otherwise, the newly acquired hair may ultimately shed.

Treatment

If your receding hairline has progressed and the scalp is looking very sparse, there are still many options available. Two popular treatments, Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), harness hair follicles from the sides and back of the scalp to help you regrow your own hair back.

Contact a Hair Loss Specialist Today

Seek the advice of a reputable hair restoration physician who will examine your scalp to determine the best course of treatment. A redistribution of healthy hair follicles to the receding hairline can result in a more youthful look, increase overall hair density, and even give you a boost of confidence.

No matter how you choose to address your receding hairline, remember this: You’re not alone. Dr. Robert Niedbalski and the staff at Northwest Hair Restoration offer a variety of solutions to help give your hairline a boost. In addition to non-surgical techniques, they conduct a host of hair restoration surgeries with the utmost level of precision and care.
