Scalp Care: Navigating The Healing Process

Hair mesotherapy or scalp

If you are having a hair transplant procedure, your scalp will need some tender loving care afterwards. What you do in the days to weeks after your surgery determines how well and how quickly you heal, as well as your level of discomfort and growth of viable hair follicles. Let’s look at how to navigate the scalp healing process.

Take Time to Rest

Expect some days to weeks for your scalp to feel and look normal. It will also take some months for your new hair to grow. While this happens, you will have some scalp discomfort and crusting.

So, rest at home after your procedure, and take the recommended amount of time off from work. Your hair restoration doctor will advise you when it’s best to go back to your job, fitness center and other strenuous activities, such as heavy lifting.

Keep Your Bandage in Place Until the Doctor Says to Remove It

The bandaging helps prevent infection and bleeding. It protects the operated areas and limits pain and swelling, too. Your physician will remove your scalp sutures within a couple of weeks.

Moisturize Your Scalp as Directed

Your physician will recommend cool compresses, ice and a soothing moisturizing spritz. Your care team at Northwest Hair Restoration will advise you on how to use your post-op care kit. Though your scalp may feel itchy at first, do not scratch it as this could prematurely remove scabs and also cause infection.

Gently Massage Your Scalp

Using gentle circular motions, massage your scalp four to five times daily to promote good circulation and to loosen crusting. Continue to apply ice or cool compresses as needed. Do not pick at any scabs, whether they are loose or not.

Use Salon-grade Hair Dyes

After your scalp heals and your new hair grows, you may consider coloring it. However, avoid drugstore dye products, and seek the advice of a professional salon as to the kind of dye safest for your renewed hair.
