Is Eyebrow Replacement Right for You?

Patient Eyebrow After eyebrow Transplant

Your eyebrows are as unique a physical feature as your fingerprints. They define your upper facial aesthetics and add to your facial expressions. If you dislike how your eyebrows look and wish for a permanent replacement solution, your hair transplant surgeon is the person to consult.

Here’s to consider when deciding if eyebrow replacement is right for you and where you can go for outstanding eyebrow replacement in Tacoma, Washington.

You Will Need a Medical Consultation with a Qualified Hair Transplant Surgeon

Eyebrow replacement involves a hair transplant called Follicular Unit Transplantation, or FUT. With FUT, the hair loss surgeon anesthetizes the eyebrow and scalp areas from which he extracts individual hair follicles. These individual hair follicles are then inserted into the thinning eyebrow areas. In all, the procedure takes three to four hours, or occasionally; a person needs a second surgery because of the extensiveness and complexity of the operated areas.

Because eyebrow replacement is a surgical treatment involving anesthesia, you will need medical consultation and clearance by your hair loss physician to ensure you are healthy. Additionally, the consultation determines the reasons behind your eyebrow hair loss–trauma, burns, aging, or overplucking as examples. The exam also rules out medical conditions which cause hair loss, such as alopecia areata.

Consider How You Wish Your Eyebrows to Change

Many people are dissatisfied with the brow line, size, shape, and symmetry Nature gave them. Or, perhaps, they have seen their eyebrows thin out as they age. Thinning eyebrows may disappear altogether or leave individuals with bald spots or oddly shaped and sized brows.

Additionally, many people dislike using eyebrow pencils and other daily applied cosmetics to fill in their brows. Still, others wish to avoid the now-popular options of eyebrow tattoos or microblading, which temporarily solve eyebrow problems.

Whatever your reasons for wanting a change in your eyebrows, be prepared to discuss them with your hair loss doctor during your in-office consultation. The doctor will tell you what possible results and what eyebrow sizes and shapes may best compliment your facial contours and hair color. Come prepared to offer ideas or photos of eyebrows you think would look best on you.

Make Sure You Have Time for Eyebrow Replacement and Recovery

Typically, eyebrow replacement is one, and it’s done surgical procedure. That being said, you do need to take a day off from work and other routines to allow for the three- to four-hour procedure and rest at home for the balance of the day.

Additionally, you should realize that afterward you:

  • May have some small bandages in place due to limited suturing
  • Must carefully wash the operated eyebrow areas daily with warm water and a mild soap
  • May take some over-the-counter pain medication for a day or two
  • Will have a small amount of crusting and puffiness in the operated areas
  • Need to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous gym workouts for a few days until swelling resolves
  • Can resume your normal activities the day after your eyebrow replacement surgery
  • Can expect full eyebrow growth within six to 12 weeks after your procedure

Eyebrow replacement procedures are successful, giving people full and natural eyebrows once again. In fact, thousands of these cosmetic surgeries are performed annually in the United States.

However, it should be noted that you will have to trim your renewed eyebrows frequently. This is because the transplanted hair follicles come from the scalp, where hair growth is ongoing without a terminal length.

Additionally, you can experience some side effects, such as site pain and bruising. With care, you should avoid long-term scarring and infection.
