People have always searched for a restorative fountain of youth that will help them stay young – or at least look young. Society has long held a fascination with beauty and youth.
Today’s scientists and medical researchers have taken up the mantle, continuing the pursuit by using science rather than mysticism. We now have quick, minimally invasive treatments that are designed to reverse the signs of aging by smoothing out wrinkles in the skin.
There are several types of temporary injectable treatments for wrinkles. Some affect wrinkles that appear when the face is at rest, such as Juvéderm; others target wrinkles that form when making facial expressions, such as Botox.
When done in a controlled way, a combination approach may offer the best results.
Popular Beauty Skin Care Treatments
Let’s explore two of the most popular treatments used today for smoothing the skin and looking more youthful: Juvéderm and Botox.
Juvéderm
If there are wrinkles present when the face is at rest, known as static wrinkles, then Juvéderm would be the appropriate treatment. It works best on the nasolabial folds (nose-to-mouth folds), frown lines, upper lip, and across the cheekbones.
This is an injectable treatment that is done during an office visit, and it can be completed in about 15 minutes for small areas or up to an hour for larger sections of skin. Juvéderm’s main ingredient is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally occurring lubricant that is found in many structures of the human body – including the skin and cartilage.
Applied by injection just underneath the skin, Juvéderm’s hyaluronic acid binds with water and retains it – plumping the skin and smoothing out wrinkles. The effects are visibly noticeable within a couple of days, and the results can last up to two years.
Botox
Another injectable, minimally invasive age-reversing treatment and the most widely known is Botox. Botox is the best way to eradicate wrinkles that appear from dynamic facial expressions like laughing and frowning.
Botox is scientifically known as botulinum toxin, a chemical compound that features a purified version of the toxic substance for therapeutic treatments.
Botox is FDA-approved for treating facial lines and wrinkles. Botox is essentially a paralytic that is injected into the site of the wrinkles to temporarily reduce the ability of the muscles underneath the skin to move and form lines. It paralyzes the facial muscles into which it is injected, causing the skin to fall slack, smoothing out wrinkles within a few days of application.

If you are interested in getting any of these treatments, be sure to hire a doctor who is not using cheap generic versions. Only seek treatment at a licensed, professional facility, and by a board-certified physician.
Dr. Robert Niedbalski is a board-certified physician who was previously a general practitioner and now practices cosmetic surgery and related treatments.
