If you are undergoing a hair transplant operation – either a FUE or FUT surgery – you probably have a lot of questions about aftercare. Rest assured, you can enjoy your renewed head of hair for years to come. However, there are important details of the post-operative period you need to understand.
Here’s more on this important topic:
What Happens After a Hair Transplant Procedure?
After a hair transplant, you will go home to rest from all strenuous activities, including gym workouts and heavy lifting for at least five to seven days. You can return to your job as your hair restoration surgeon directs. You will keep your scalp bandage in place to limit any bleeding and inflammation.
Regarding how the operated areas of your scalp will look and feel, here is what you can expect:
- Crusting and areas of very pink skin
- Some itching and scabbing
- A thin, healed over line on the scalp at the follicle donor site
- Small hairs to shed from the transplanted follicles within two to four weeks
- A period of hair follicle dormancy lasting two to four months
- New hair growing from the transplants (takes about 9 months)
Because you will have some scalp pain and inflammation after your surgery, your doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory pain medication. Drink plenty of water to keep your scalp well-hydrated, and use copper peptide spritz on the scalp to increase moisture and speed healing, if recommended by your doctor.
Other Aspects of Post-Operative Care
To further reduce scalp inflammation, sleep with your head at a 45- or 90-degree angle until your doctor says you may lie flat in bed. Also, be gentle with your scalp as your hair begins to grow. Avoid hair dryers, heated styling tools, and vigorous towel drying.
In addition, your doctor may recommend you have additional ACell and PRP treatments after surgery to encourage follicle viability and to speed healing. Platelet-rich plasma injections are created from your own blood. ACell treatments are specially developed proteins that form a scaffold to support viable and long-lasting hair growth in the operated areas. Your physician will tell you if these therapies can benefit your renewed head of hair.
Finally, Trocomin shampoo and conditioner may help both your scalp and your new hair growth. At your periodic follow-up visits with your physician, you will learn what long-term care and precautions you should take as you continue on your hair restoration journey.
