Hair Replacement For Women And Men: Know The Basics

Hair replacement on the head

If there is anything that many men and women of a certain age have in common, unfortunately, it is alopecia (hair loss). It is often associated with men when, in fact, hair loss is a common problem among both men and women.

Whereas men first notice hair loss as early as their 20s, women may begin to notice significant hair thinning in their 40s and 50s. For both sexes, the most common cause of scalp hair loss is genetic. In women, there is a gradual decline in the health of their hair follicles, resulting in shorter, finer hair over time. However, hereditary hair loss for women is different than male-pattern alopecia. Hereditary hair loss for women typically features bald spots and an uneven hairline. Male-pattern alopecia typically doesn’t feature bald spots and the hairline remains relatively intact.

The good news is that regardless of the type or cause of hair loss, both men and women have treatment options. At Northwest Hair Restoration, we offer many solutions specifically tailored to each patient’s needs.

Hair Replacement Options for Men and Women

At Northwest Hair Restoration, Dr. Robert Niedbalski and his dedicated team of professionals offer surgical and nonsurgical hair loss treatment options for both men and women that protect, renew, and restore hair.

Nonsurgical treatments include:

  • The use of medications
  • Nutritional supplements with all-natural ingredients.
  • Laser hair therapy stimulates your hair to grow thicker and grow for an extended period of time so that your hair is longer.
  • Scalp injection therapy.
  • Cosmetic cover-up products.

Surgical treatment solutions include:

  • Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) or “strip” procedure involves the removal of a healthy strip of hair-bearing skin from the back or sides of the head. The strip is divided into tiny grafts of separate follicular units made up of one to four hairs each. The follicular units are carefully implanted into the balding area of the scalp.
  • Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)uses a “punch”-like device that extracts individual follicular units directly from the scalp. The individual follicular units are implanted into the balding area.

Both of these transplant methods can produce natural-looking results, but the best treatment for you depends on the extent of your hair loss, the supply of viable follicular units in the donor area, and the kind of results you want to achieve.

It should be noted that hair replacement will not stop genetic hair loss from progressing. So, it is important to assess the need for ongoing therapy to protect and/or renew your non-transplanted hair follicles. If you incorporate one or more of the above treatment options in your routine, you can have less hair loss over time and be happier with your hair restoration results.
