Which Vitamins Help with Hair Loss Treatment?

Vitamins for hair loss

Just as your body depends on nutrients – including vitamins and minerals – to maintain optimal health, it also depends on specific vitamins and nutrients to maintain a healthy head of hair.

Research shows that long-term daily intake of these hair-friendly supplements, and foods with these nutrients, can nourish thinning hair and help prevent further hair loss. Not only that, but these supplements taken during and after hair loss treatment can help regrow hair that was lost due to illness, poor diet, and/or a vitamin deficiency.

Keys to Healthier Hair

Telogen effluvium is the clinical name for hair that has thinned or fallen out due to excessive stress or a traumatic situation. It’s a temporary hair loss condition in which the hair roots that would otherwise be in the growing stage are suddenly forced into the telogen – or resting – stage of the hair growth cycle.

These roots, therefore, stop growing hair. This is believed to be a chemical reaction in the body which allows the body’s efforts to go toward fighting off the stress, but the net effect is hair loss.

This condition can be treated naturally over several months by consuming more of the following key vitamins and minerals:

  • Biotin
  • Vitamin C
  • Niacin (vitamin B-3)
  • Iron
  • Zinc

A complete supplement in the proper dosage has prescribed by your doctor has been shown to be particularly effective in promoting hair growth, thickening hair strands, and preventing further hair loss in both men and women.

Taking supplements can also be helpful in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (AGA), or male pattern baldness, which is the most common cause of baldness in men, characterized by the gradual decrease in the size of hair follicles over time. In addition, supplements can help promote hair growth following surgery, radiation treatment, or chemotherapy.

Hair Loss Diet

While some causes of hair loss – including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, illness, or certain medications – may only be moderately addressed by following a hair-loss-reversal diet, both men and women often benefit from the right nutritional support in just a matter of months by eating foods that contain the vitamins and minerals associated with hair growth. Such foods offer a healthy and natural method of treatment, including:

  • Nuts – which contain biotin, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and copper.
  • Eggs – which are an excellent source of protein, biotin, zinc, selenium, sulfur, iron, and B vitamins.
  • Spinach – which contains iron, beta-carotene, folate, and vitamins A and C.
  • Sweet potatoes – which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, and vitamins A, B, C, E, and K.

You can also try hair-growth supplements that contain the vitamins and minerals listed above.
