Early Signs You May Need Hair Restoration

Hair Restoration

Hair loss is a common problem in all parts of the world, affecting men and women alike. In fact, statistics show that 40% of men start losing some of their hair by age 35, while 80% of women experience some form of hair loss by the age of 60.

However, hair loss usually happens gradually. It can go undetected until it becomes a noticeable issue – especially because it is normal to shed up to 100-200 hairs per day.

You might notice a difference in your hairline, your hair thinning at the top of your head in the mirror or in photos, or a large amount of hair left on your pillow or in the shower. The sooner you detect hair loss, the sooner and more effectively it can be addressed.

With that in mind, let’s talk about a few of the early warning signs that it may be time to consider your options for hair replacement treatment.

First Signs of Hair Loss in Men

Using the Hamilton-Norwood classification system, hair specialists have identified these major patterns of hair loss in men:

  • Hair starts thinning around the temples and at the crown or vertex (the top of the back of the head).
  • Hair begins thinning and moving back around the front of the head on the sides – referred to as a receding hairline. This is the most common type of hair thinning in men, with the hair forming an “M” shape as the two sides recede at a faster rate than the middle of the scalp.
  • Thinning of hair on the top of the head can happen over time. You may not notice this for a number of years until baldness becomes fully visible.

These types of hair loss in men are usually best treated with hair replacement surgery. This treatment utilizes your own hair, and the follicles are usually taken from the back of the head near the neck where hair is more densely populated. Your body will recognize the cells as your own cells, and the hair will simply regrow in its new location on your head.

How About Hair Loss in Women?

Women who are experiencing thinning hair tend to gain better results from non-surgical treatments. Hair replacement surgery often doesn’t “take” as well in women as it does in men, for various reasons. Talk with your hair surgeon about what therapy would work best for restoring your hair.
