You’ve taken the big step and will have hair transplant surgery. Our professional hair restoration team wants you to know how to optimize your healing so you enjoy that renewed head of hair for years to come. Here’s the care we recommend when you return home from your state-of-the-art procedure.
One, Keep Your Bandage in Place Until After Your Scalp Has Crusted Over
All hair transplant patients have some degree of scalp crusting. We encourage you to keep your bandage on until those crusts are firmly set in place, protecting your operated areas and new hair grafts.
Also, you can use cool compresses or ice to soothe the scalp and reduce inflammation.
Two, Rest Up for a Few Days
As minimally invasive as hair transplant procedures are, they still involve anesthetic, tissue disruption, and potential scarring. So, limit strenuous activities for a few days after your surgery, and avoid the gym for at least a week to limit scalp tenderness and swelling.
Three, Take Your Pain Meds as Directed
Your hair restoration doctor will prescribe some anti-inflammatory pain meds for one to three days to limit discomfort, bruising, and swelling on your scalp and face. Stay well hydrated, too, and resume your healthy diet.
Four, Keep Your Head at a 45-degree Angle
While you watch TV, rest, and sleep at night, keep your head at a 45 to 90-degree angle. Do not lie flat until your doctor says it is OK to do so. Again, this posture will limit inflammation and soreness.
Five, Keep Your Scalp Moisturized
Your hair restoration doctor will supply you with a copper-infused peptide solution to moisturize your scalp throughout the day. This spritz will speed healing and increase comfort.
Six, Get ACell and PRP Therapy if Your Doctor Advises Them
Your doctor may advise ACell and PRP therapy to optimize graft adhesion and scalp healing. Administered before your surgery, ACell protein forms a scaffold for new hair follicles, and platelet-rich plasma injections (derived from a sample of your blood) encourage healing, tissue growth, and good circulation. Discuss these options with your hair loss doctor, particularly if you need more than one hair transplant surgery.
Seven, Be Careful with Your New Head of Hair
Easy does it is our best advice. That means:
- Gentle styling and brushing and no tight ponytails, braids, or buns
- No peroxide dye if you choose to color your renewed head of hair
- Using a good stylist who knows hair care products well and will steer you toward natural ones
- Avoiding blow dryers and rough towel drying
- Using Trocomin shampoo and conditioner in the weeks after your surgery to encourage scalp circulation and delivery of beneficial nutrients
- Considering a Laser cap to encourage new growth and to protect the scalp
- Massaging your scalp four to five times a day using gentle, circular motions
