Whether it’s hormonal or an underlying medical condition, burn marks or scars, there are many reasons why it may be difficult for some men to achieve the beard they desire. And while some men are just fine not having a beard, others who see facial hair as a sign of virility, maturity, or an important part of their identity continue to seek out options to grow out their facial hair. The good news is that hair restoration techniques provide a viable option for men who want to grow a beard but, for what whatever reason, cannot. Here’s what you need to know about hair restoration on your beard.
A Natural Approach
Thanks to state-of-the art techniques, beard transplants have evolved to the point where the restored beard looks and feels as natural as your own hair – because it is! The transplanted hair used to restore your beard comes from your own scalp; most often the back of the head where the hair is the thickest and fullest. Using your own hair helps eliminate problems with beard color, texture and consistency.
Techniques
Most full beard transplants are performed with a follicular unit transfers (FUT); this technique involves the removing of transplanting hair – approximately 2000 at a time. After making small incisions in the beard area, the source hair strategically placed to ensure a natural looking texture and appearance. Only local anesthesia is required and the procedure can be done in the doctor’s office over the course of a day.
If the beard for the most part is full but experiencing small patches that won’t grow, the doctor likely will recommend an FUE, or Follicular Unit Extraction. This technique involves the transplanting of hair from the side or rear of the scalp. These “donor follicles” are grafted in small groupings directly into the affected area. Again, local anesthesia is used but the process takes less time than the FUT for a full beard.
Post-op Expectations
For both the FUT and FUE, it may take a few weeks to see results. Expect your transplanted hairs to fall out 15-30 days after surgery – don’t worry, that’s normal. About 90 days after your surgery your beard should have completed its growth, with most hair follicles settling into place. Once the new hair begins to grow, it will remain for life and can be treated like any normal beard.
Is a Beard Restoration Right for You?
The answer is “yes,” so long as the hair on your scalp is healthy. Men who have male pattern baldness and are interested in the beard restoration process have more limited options; that’s why it’s important to speak with the recognized experts in the hair restoration field.
