New ACell + PRP Injection Hair Growth Results

We continue to see very encouraging results with ACell + PRP Injection Therapy. The following hair regrowth results were achieved without hair transplant surgery.

28 yr old male with significant hairline recession in the temples. Treatment with ACell + PRP injections. Follow up 8 months after injection therapy. Patient had been on Propecia with minimal regrowth results and continued taking Propecia. It is rare to see any regrowth in the hairline with Propecia only.

Female patient with thinning eyebrows before (top) and after (bottom). Follow up was only 2 months after ACell + PRP injection therapy.

Regenerative Technology with ACell MatriStem

Regenerative technology is the latest breakthrough innovation in the practice of hair restoration.  An entirely new and unique application of a medical device, called an Extra-Cellular Matrix (ECM), is being used for scar reduction and treatment of hair loss.   ACell Inc, MatriStem© is a specific ECM product, demonstrating excellent results.

ECM devices are a cornerstone of medical research in wound healing and tissue regeneration because of their ability to remodel and repair damaged tissue. How Regenerative Technology initiates a new chapter in Hair Restoration:

Since the 1960’s, the evolution of hair restoration has seen many important innovations, the most significant being the development of the Follicular Unit Graft.  Early hair surgeries transplanted large 4mm grafts, or “hair plugs.”  The introduction of the more aesthetically pleasing Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) has enabled surgeons to distribute donor hair across larger areas of the scalp, virtually eliminating the “doll hair” look of hair plugs, delivering impressive natural results.(figure 1_ below)

How Regenerative Technology initiates a new chapter in Hair Restoration:

Since the 1960’s, the evolution of hair restoration has seen many important innovations, the most significant being the development of the Follicular Unit Graft.  Early hair surgeries transplanted large 4mm grafts, or “hair plugs.”  The introduction of the more aesthetically pleasing Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) has enabled surgeons to distribute donor hair across larger areas of the scalp, virtually eliminating the “doll hair” look of hair plugs (fig. 1, delivering impressive natural results.

The introduction of medical therapy with Rogaine (Minoxidil) and Propecia (Finasteride) added a new dimension to the treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia.  With daily use, patients could slow down, and in a few instances, reverse their hair loss.  As long as these medications were used every day, the results were often substantial. In the long run, however, compliance was an issue and many well-intentioned patients who were not consistent with the daily use became disillusioned with Propecia and Rogaine as a non-surgical treatment for baldness. Today, medical therapy is usually positioned as an effective way to maintain existing hair.  When combined with FUT, Propecia and Rogaine have proven to be very useful.

Despite these advances, a skilled hair restoration surgeon is still challenged by:

  • A chronic shortage of donor hair.
  • Progressing hair loss due to patient non-compliance or intolerance of medical therapy (Propecia and Rogaine).
  • The build up of donor scar tissue with subsequent transplant procedures, open donor and multiple strip scarring from old graft harvesting techniques, and over-harvesting of hair follicles by Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) (figure 2).

Fig. 2 Donor scars from plug and strip overharvesting and poor closure technique

Fig 2-A Contrary to some promotions FUE transplantation is not scarless and does deplete donor hair.

Regenerative Therapy for hair loss, utilizing ACell, bridges the gap between donor hair supply and demand because it produces new hair follicles while stabilizing and reversing miniaturized hair.  Results have been clinically demonstrated (figure3), opening a new chapter for the successful treatment of hair loss patients.

What is an Extracellular Matrix?

Present in all mammalian tissue, the ECM is the thin layer that wraps around all the cells in our organs and tissues. Produced by the cells it surrounds, the extracellular matrix has two main functions:

  1. Structural Support – The ECM is a biological scaffold composed of several types of proteins including Elastin, Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid, Proteoglycans and Glycoproteins.  The combination of these proteins determines the qualities of the tissue that they reside in.  For example, collagen and elastin provide resiliency to youthful skin; but scar tissue feels dense, rigid and inflexible.
  2. Cell Communication – The cells in our bodies “talk” to each other using special protein and hormone messengers. Because the ECM surrounds every cell, it can influence these “conversations” by controlling the passage of chemicals to and from cells in the surrounding tissue. It can even initiate communication by releasing its own unique chemical messengers in response to changes in the local environment, which is even more important in the instance of tissue damage.

How does and ECM like Acell work?

Fig. 4 ECM provide structural support at the cellular level for new tissue growth.

When introduced into damaged tissue, ECM devices like ACell will:

  • Provide structural support at the cellular level for new tissue growth (Figure 4).
  • Recruit a high concentration of growth factors and adult stem cells into the area of injury
  • “Activates” the stem cells, which then orchestrate the regeneration of new native tissue.
  • Dramatically increase the blood flow in the injured tissue. (A process called angio-neogenesis).

One way to conceptualize this process is to imagine a neighborhood that has been damaged by a storm. ACell acts like the first responder team and begins to organize the clean up and rebuilding effort. It sets up a sophisticated communication network that calls other important “rescue workers” (growth factors and stem cells) vital to the reconstruction of the damaged homes and businesses. Large populations of various cell types are called to the scene to begin the cleanup of debris (damaged cells).  ACell builds “new roads” by growing many new blood vessels to facilitate the removal of cell debris and carry in new raw materials needed for the repairs.  Stem cells are activated by ACell, which in turn supervise the reconstruction by using the available blueprints (DNA) that specify how the neighborhood was built. The activation of adult stem cells is a critical step in the process, fundamentally changing the way the stem cells cells behave in the rebuilding phase. Without stem cell activation, the result would be a clean up of all the junk from the neighborhood, and little to no reconstruction; in other words, just scar formation would occur.

When ACell MatriStem is introduced into the injured tissue, the balance is shifted from scar formation to tissue remodeling and regeneration. By activating adult stem cells present in the tissue, ACell  begins to rebuild damaged tissue so it’s like new again rather than forming the dense, rigid scar tissue that would normally be present.  Acell rebuilds as though there never was an injury.

Fig. 5 ACell applied to linear strip wound prior to closure - ACell appears to rebuild damaged tissue so it’s like new again rather than forming the dense, rigid scar tissue that would normally be present.

How is ACell being used to treat hair loss patients?

Dr. Gary Hitzig a New York Hair Surgeon has pioneered the successful application of ACell in the treatment of hair loss.  Dr. Hitzig has developed protocols for the use of ACell in a variety of clinical scenarios:

    1. Treating genetic hair loss using ACell with FUT.
    2. Treating genetic hair loss using ACell alone.
    3. Treating Scarring alopecia and donor scars

Hair Restoration More Popular Thanks to More Non-Invasive Techniques

Here at Northwest Hair Restoration, we have seen an increase in the popularity of hair restoration procedures over the last couple of years. Local increases in hair restoration seem to mirror a national increase that shows surgical hair restoration procedures jumping 11 percent in 2010 compared to results from an International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ISHRS) practice census in 2008. Dr. Robert Niedbalski, hair transplant surgeon and medical director of Northwest Hair Restoration, attributes the increase in hair restoration procedures at his practice to the medical breakthroughs in the field that allow for more impressive results in a shorter period of time.

Dr. Niedbalski is the only doctor in the Pacific Northwest to offer non-invasive ACell – platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to regenerate hair in men and women in the early to moderate stages of hair loss. This hair regeneration technique was discovered by Dr. Gary Hitzig, who Dr. Niedbalski collaborated with to offer to his patients in the Seattle – Tacoma, WA area.

Using the FDA-approved ACell wound healing powder MatriStem® MicroMatrix™ and a blood serum combination, Dr. Niedbalski is able to activate stem cells present in scalp tissue and significantly increase the rate of hair re-growth. The breakthrough hair restoration technique has in some cases dramatically multiplied the number of hair follicles in an area that has previously stopped growing hair. Dr. Niedbalski expects similar results when used to restore eyebrows.

“In some cases, surgery may not be needed to regenerate hair, which was something unheard of just a couple of year’s ago.” said Dr. Niedbalski. “Within six months after undergoing a hair transplant or ACell-PRP injections, many of our patients tell us that they look years younger and have more confidence,” said Dr. Niedbalski.

According to the 2011 ISHRS practice census, males are still the predominate patients of hair restoration surgery (86 percent), although female patients have increased 24 percent since 2004 to 14 percent. The majority of patients fall between the ages of 30-49 years old.

ACell Matristem Update

Since I began offering ACell Hair Cloning Therapy at Northwest Hair Restoration in 2010, I have been tweaking the “recipe” in an effort to continually improve the results.  This is an update on these changes, and how I expect them to impact your hair restoration treatment.

ACell MatriStem (ACell for short) is an advanced treatment for genetic hair loss. When injected into the scalp, ACell activates stem cells present in the scalp tissues, which in turn, direct the duplication of hair follicles and other scalp tissues while decreasing scar formation.  Acell can be used in conjunction with Follicular Unit Hair Transplant surgery or as a stand-alone procedure.  http://hairreplacementsurgeon.com/procedures/acell-matristem-with-prp-platelet-rich-plasma-for-hair-multiplication/

ACell is combined with PRP

The most significant change I have made in how ACell is applied to treat my hair loss patients is that I am now mixing the ACell powder in PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), instead of saline. PRP is derived from a small sample of the patient’s blood by a special processing method. PRP is rich in growth factors, stem cells and other “goodies” that greatly potentiate the tissue regenerative properties that make ACell such a powerful tool in the treatment of hair loss.

Smaller particle size

ACell powder is now available in a smaller particle size, which means it can now be more thoroughly dissolved before injecting.  Until now, one of the challenges in preparing ACell powder for injection was utilizing all of the product in the vial. The larger particle size of the product didn’t dissolve well and tended to cling to the sides of the vial and the stopper. I have found the smaller sized ACell particles dissolve much more easily and completely, making the preparation faster and maximizing all of the product.

Fewer Complications

Although ACell injections into the scalp have not been prone to any serious complications such as allergic reaction or infection, some swelling and scalp soreness is common for a few days after the procedure – even if you have not had a hair transplant at the same time. With the introduction of a smaller particle size of ACell powder, the injections can now be done with a significantly smaller needle.  Patients now have had much less swelling and little to no post injection discomfort.

Recent results

The following photos are representative of the results we have seen in patients who have been treated with ACell/PRP:

  • Female Pattern Hair Loss: One month post injection ACell/PRP, without hair transplantation and no medication, topical products or laser therapy.  These photos are 50X magnification of her hairline in the temple area. Notice the increase in the number and color intensity of hairs in the 1 month post treatment photo on the right (red arrows).

  • Donor Scar:  4 months post ACell/PRP injection with follicular unit hair transplant using strip harvesting method:

New Applications

I have had some success in treating non-hereditary types of hair loss such as Alopecia Areata and Scarring Alopecia with ACell/PRP injection therapy.

Eyebrow Study

I am conducting a case study on the use of ACell as a non-surgical treatment for eyebrow hair loss.  Patients who participate in the study will receive a free ACell/PRP injection for their eyebrows. To see if you qualify for this study please contact Northwest Hair Restoration @ 253-572-2949.

Eyebrow Hair Regeneration Study Using ACell

Tacoma., WA: Robert Niedbalski, D.O., renowned hair transplant surgeon and medical director at Northwest Hair Restoration in Tacoma, WA, is the only doctor in the Pacific Northwest to offer the revolutionary ACell plus platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to regenerate hair in men and women in the early to moderate stages of hair loss. This hair regeneration technique was discovered by Dr. Gary Hitzig, who Dr. Niedbalski collaborated with before offering to his patients in the Seattle – Tacoma, WA area.

With proven results in its ability to regenerate hair on the scalp, Dr. Niedbalski, is now studying the ACell + PRP injections ability to regenerate eyebrow hair. Dr. Niedbalski is looking for men and women between the ages of 21 and 55 that are in good general health and have experienced some form of eyebrow hair loss. Patients must have some existing hair and active hair follicles to qualify for the study.

Using the FDA-approved ACell wound healing powder MatriStem® MicroMatrix™ and an arterial blood serum combination, Dr. Niedbalski is able to activate stem cells present in skin tissue and significantly increase the rate of hair re-growth. The breakthrough hair restoration technique has in some cases dramatically multiplied the number of hair follicles in an area that had previously been thinning. Dr. Niedbalski expects similar results when used to restore eyebrows.

“This ACell + PRP injection therapy is truly a breakthrough in hair restoration,” said Dr. Niedbalski. “We are excited about the hair regeneration possibilities for non-surgical patients. I have no reason to believe that this technique won’t have the same successful hair growth results for eyebrows as we have seen in hair loss patients on the top of their scalp.”

Men and women interested in participating in this 12 month eyebrow restoration study should contact Northwest Hair Restoration at (253) 572-2949.

New ACell Hair Cloning Breakthrough

Northwest Hair Restoration is the only practice in the Pacific Northwest to offer impressive ACell hair restoration treatment.

Robert Niedbalski, D.O., hair transplant surgeon and medical director at Northwest Hair Restoration in Tacoma, WA, is now offering an advanced treatment for genetic hair loss.  The breakthrough hair restoration technique dramatically multiplies the number of hair follicles in an area that has previously stopped growing hair.  Using FDA approved ACell wound healing powder MatriStem® MicroMatrix™ and an arterial blood serum combination, Dr. Niedbalski is able to activate stem cells present in scalp tissue and significantly increase the rate of hair re-growth.

This hair cloning technique was discovered by Dr. Gary Hitzig, a leading hair transplant researcher and surgeon.  Dr. Hitzig discovered that MatriStem powder, when dissolved in an arterial blood serum rich in the patient’s own adult stem cells could be injected   into the donor area and top of scalp where hair is being transplanted.  The powder and blood serum combination acted like a hair growth accelerator and fertilizer by activating stem cells present in scalp tissues and motivated healing by duplicating  normal tissue and hair follicles instead of forming a scar.

In collaboration with Dr. Hitzig, Dr. Niedbalski is the only hair restoration surgeon in the Pacific Northwest to offer this significant new treatment for hair loss.

“I’ve been following Dr. Hitzig’s research and work with ACell and have seen the impressive hair growth results that have resulted from using this blood serum combination,” said Dr. Niedbalski.  “I am honored and excited to offer this new treatment to patients of Northwest Hair Restoration.  Patients will not only experience significant hair re-growth in just six months, but the wound where donor hair is taken and transplanted will heal with little or no signs of a scar within a few weeks.   This is a notable difference from previous methods that required months for healing and produced more scarring.”
